Catawba
is a North American hybrid red grape that was the most planted variety in the United States up until the 1860s. The grape's exact origins are disputed, but it seems most likely that it was discovered in the eastern states (probably the Catawba River in North Carolina) in the early 19th Century. The genetic structure of the hybrid is also unclear; Vitis labrusca is accepted as one parent but a range of other native species are potentially involved.
