Surtout connu du grand public pour ses actions de vulgarisation scientifique et ses prises de positions sur des questions éthiques et philosophiques ayant trait à la médecine et aux biotechnologies — notamment le clonage et les OGM
Grand randonneur et amoureux de la nature, il a notamment traversé la France à pieds19
Touché par un cancer avec des atteintes osseuses diagnostiqué en avril 2020, la maladie le rattrape en avril 2021 après une première rémission19, le médecin étant atteint d'un cancer généralisé.
Il meurt le 6 juillet 2021 à Paris, à l'âge de 76 ans, des suites de son cancer

Pour avoir accompagné des malades du sida et du cancer en fin de vie dans une Abbaye située dans le Tarn, ou lâ jais pu voir combien les moines prenait soins de leurs patients, 24 heures sur 24 il y avait toujours une personne à leurs chevets, c’est malade qui était lâ dans le calme de l’abbaye ne semblait pas anxieux, plutôt serein de savoir qu’ils allaient partir bientôt ils avaient déjà trouver la paix de l’âme .
Il y a quatre ans déjà jais au cours d’une promenade dans le parc du centre de Kerpape, croisé un moine de l’abbaye Notre-Dame de Timadeuc, allongé sur un banc derrière un buisson en face de la mer regardant l’ile de Groix, après avoir discuté quel qu’instant il m’expliquât que se sentant très fatigués il avait vu un médecin qui a la suite d’analyse luis avait diagnostiqué un cancer généraliser, luis aussi avait semble-t-il déjà trouver la paix à écouter les clapotis des vagues venant mourir sur le sable come le tic-tac d’une horloge grignotant le temps à la manière d’une sourie qui aurait découvert un fromage.
Sans oublier ce médecin généraliste spécialiste des maladies tropicales, toujours prêt à rendre service jusqu’à faire rapatrier un patient tombé malade à l’étranger à qui on a diagnostiquer une leucémie avant son départ en retraite, dans son cabinet trônait bien en évidence un béret vert, car il avait été infirmier Commando dans la marine avant d’être médecin généraliste, il nous quitta quatre ou cinq mois après être parti en retraite.
Aujourd’hui un de mes amis proche se trouve en quatrième années de rémission qui après le cancer, combat les effets secondaires des chimios thérapies marche par marche.
