The variety is a French origin grape. It would be a crossing of Madeleine Royal varieties and Malingre realized in 1857, often used by breeders to obtain some early varieties.

Its name comes in reference to the relatively early maturity at Sainte Madeleine on 22 July.

It is authorized in Belgium in the: Côtes de Sambre and Meuse. . .

Primitivo or Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a red grape representing nearly 10% of the California vineyard. Some analysis revealed that is the genetic equivalent of Crljenak Kaštelanski present in Croatia and with the Primitivo cultivated in the Italian region of Puglia.

It is also met in Australia, New Zealand, United States, Brazil, Chile, Italy, Alemagne, Bulgaria, Albania, Malta, Portugal, Greece, and Croatia.

It is also increasingly often in California used as basic grape in assemblies with some grape  tradition of Bordeaux varietals or Syrah. . .
