Is a natural sweet wine originally produced in the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira. From different grape varieties: Sercial, Malvasia, Terrantez, Tinta Negra mole, Bual, white Verdelho.
Its mode of elaboration is mostly random: in order to better preserve it during navigation in the tropics, the British supplemented it with sugar cane alcohol. It is by observing that this mixture, agitated for weeks in the superheated bunkers of the ships that the wine obtained great taste qualities that are reproduced today: the mixed wine of alcohol is stirred and steamed at 50 ° C for several weeks to produce Madeira, titrated at 18 ° C, and of which four varieties are distinguished.
