The Northern Territory and the Vine & Vineyards

 

Glowing deserts surrounding Uluru and Alice Springs to the tropical regions of Darwin and Kakadu National Park.

The Northern Territory is a remarkable beauty and easier access you might imagine.

 

Far North Australia. This land appears to have given birth to all the cliches: blue skies and deserts of sight in the Red Centre, incredible variety of wildlife and tropical flora, streams and untamed nature Top End And to top it off, a host of venomous animals.

Le Chateau Hornsby, the only producer in the state of Northern Territory, but John and Shirley Crayford have filled the void by establishing a vineyard on the Stuart Highway, 180 km north of Alice Springs.

They created a small plantation of syrah, cabernet ruby, Riesling and Chardonnay, but they specialize in wine mango. Conventional wines are made for them by Geoff Patritti McLaren Vale.

 

Denis Miranda and Hornsby came to Alice Springs in 1969 as pharmacists Alice Springs hospital and decided to settle here. They bought a pharmacy in Todd Street, and regardless of hectares of land on the site of the cave.

The idea came from developed an experimental cultivation of grapes with the intention of creating a cellar thereafter

Des déserts rougeoyants entourant Uluru et Alice Springs jusqu'aux régions tropicales de Darwin et du parc national de Kakadu.

Le Territoire du Nord est d'une beauté remarquable et d'un accès plus aisé qu'on pourrait l'imaginer.

 

Le Grand Nord australien. Cette terre semble avoir donné naissance à tous les clichés : ciels bleus et déserts à perte de vue dans le Red Centre, incroyable variété de la faune et de la flore tropicales, torrents et nature indomptée dans le Top End Et, pour compléter le tout, avec une foule d'animaux venimeux.

C’est dans cette partie centrale du Nord de l’Australie qui s’étend sur 1 349 129 km², où la viticulture est limitée à un tout petit vignoble dans la région d’Alice Spring.

 Il y règne un peu partout une chaleur torride, sauf dans les zones marécageuses infestées de crocodiles. Cet état est donc limité en ce qui concerne le travail de la vigne.
 

Et c’est là, situé 11 km de Hornsby, au sud de Heavitree Gap, à l'est de la Stuart Highway, que ce trouve  le premier producteur du le centre de l'Australie.

Le Chateau Hornsby, le seul producteur dans l'état du Territoire du Nord, mais John et Shirley Crayford ont comblé le vide en établissant un vignoble sur la Stuart Highway, 180 km au nord d'Alice Springs.

Ils ont crée une petite plantation de syrah, cabernet rubis, Riesling et chardonnay, mais ils  se spécialisent dans les vins de mangue. Les vins conventionnels sont faits pour eux par Geoff Patritti à McLaren Vale.

Le premier millésime a été produit en 1977, et en 1978, le cru a montré une nette amélioration. Chaque année, la qualité des vins est en constante en amélioration et maintenant, le Chateau Hornsby, produit du vins blancs et rouges qui sont très recherchés secs agréables.

En 1979, un restaurant et des installations touristiques ont été établis et les visiteurs peuvent maintenant profiter d'un déjeuner barbecue au soleil, et déguster quelques vins, et inspecter la cave et ses environs. (Un restaurant de qualité fonctionne de la nuit).

Le temps des récoltes au Chateau Hornsby est toujours un réel effort de la communauté. Les raisins sont récoltés à l'aube par des amis et de leurs familles qui commencent à 4 heure du matin. La cueillette cesse alors, après le petit déjeuner, car les températures peuvent monter au-dessus de 30 degrés Celsius.

 

Chateau Hornsby est ouvert pour la dégustation du vin et de la vente de 10h00 jusqu'à 17h00. Tous les jours de Mars à Décembre.

Bien que des zones d'une extraordinaire richesse soient accessibles, le territoire reste d'une nature hostile : les fleuves sont peuplés de crocodiles et il peut s'écouler des semaines sans qu'aucune voiture ne passe dans le désert. Mais il y a aussi Darwin, la plus décontractée des métropoles australiennes, et Alice Spring, ville-frontière moderne au milieu de nulle part.

Des déserts aux tropiques, la région est particulièrement agréable à la saison sèche, en hiver. Le Wet est également synonyme de frissons : la mousson s'accompagne de spectaculaires orages, des cyclones balaient le littoral et des pluies diluviennes isolent les villages et les sites.

 

L’Arrivée des premiers immigrants, c’est fait grâce à l’importation de chameaux d’Afghanistan, qui transportaient, hommes et marchandises pendant des jours, et qui servaient ensuite à ravitailler Alice Spring.

La Construction du Chemin de fer en 1871, n’aurait pas pu se réaliser sans les chameaux du désert, aujourd’hui, ils  permettent au touriste de faire des randonnées.
