Tannat Producers Central Coast California Vineyards

Tannat is a red wine grape.

This black grape is probably derived from the Béarn, present in the southwest since the Romans time , perhaps even before. In 1783-1782, it is mentioned in the Gers and in 1842, the Tannat plants are shipped to the collection of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris.

In France it is found in the vineyards of Madiran, Cahors, Floc de Gascogne, Côtes du Brulhois, Irouléguy, Tursan and Côtes de Saint-Mont. It is also grown in Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil.

The term Tannat comes from the Occitan language Tanat, tan tannin, that is to say, tanned, which is due to its high tannin, or purplish berries. . .
